Local Architects, Designers, Engineers Compete to Build
Giant Structures totally of Canned Food
Annually in November at the Old Hickory Mall
“ONE CAN” FOR RIFA
Canstruction® is making a significant contribution to the fight against hunger. The local competition, called “One Can Stop Hunger”, held the first two weeks of November at the Old Hickory Mall is a successful campaign to raise funds to feed the hungry. Proceeds are donated to RIFA Food Bank which provides food for the poor and for other non-profit agencies which are feeding the poor.
Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams, led by Jackson architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant structures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibition the food used in the structures is donated to RIFA Food Bank for distribution to agencies which serve the poor in West Tennessee.
In 2007, the following local teams created a visual feast for the eyes with their unique sculptures made of canned food: Aeneas Telephone and Internet, Gerdau Ameristeel, Regional Hospital, West Tennessee Healthcare, Jackson Energy Authority, Union University, Lambuth University, Tennessee Technology Center.
Canstruction sponsors were Regions Bank, Morgan Keegan, Bank of Madison County, West Tennessee Healthcare, The Jackson Sun, and Bancorp South.
RIFA Food Bank is operated by Regional Interfaith Association, which also operates RIFA Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry, RIFA Thrift Store, RIFA Home Repair, RIFA Life Enrichment, and RIFA FISH.
